We received a lot of inquiries about the frequency of washing curtains. Customers want to keep the curtains tidy but worry that washing curtains too frequently will damage the fabric.
The humid weather in Singapore probably makes the fabric more prone to mold and wear, so we have some suggestions for washing curtains.
Factor 1: The types of curtains affect washing frequency
The washing frequency can differ quite a bit because sheer, dimout and blackout curtains have different fabric thicknesses, materials, and coatings.
Blackout curtain
Blackout curtains are generally heavier and have a special blackout backing. Frequent washing can potentially affect the coating, fabric shape, or appearance. Therefore, 12 months is usually a reasonable interval, combined with regular vacuuming. Please note that blackout curtains should be washed in cold water, and aviod to use dryer. Due to high tamerature probably damage the blackout layer. So, we recommend hanging the curtains to air-dry naturally.
Sheer curtain
Sheer curtains are usually the most frequently cleaned. Because they are lightweight and often remain closed during the day, they can accumulate dust and airborne particles. Furthermore, they are normally white or light-colored, so it is easy to see the dust.
Thus, we suggest wash Sheer curtains every 6 months and vacuuming them monthly, so that keep them tidy. In Singapore’s humid environment, regular cleaning also helps prevent musty smells.
Dimout curtain
Dimout curtains are thicker and designed to reduce incoming light. They generally don’t need washing as frequently as sheers. Cleaning every 6 months is suitable for most Singapore homes. If the room is relatively clean and the curtains are not exposed to much dust, once a year may be sufficient.
Factor 2: The area of the curtains affect washing frequency
Balcony/Living area
Living room and balcony curtains are often exposed to dust from open windows, air-conditioning, and daily household activity. If the home is near a busy road or construction area, cleaning may need to be more frequent. We suggest washing them every 3 to 6 months.
Bedrooms
However, bedrooms usually have less dust compared to living areas, we still suggest washing them yearly, to avoid accumulated dust, skin particles, and allergens over time. If people are allergic to dust, shortening the cleaning cycle is better.
How to wash curtains?
Step 1: Take the curtains down gently and remove curtain hooks, rings, or clips. Keep the hardware in a safe place, and ensure don’t lose anything.
Step 2: Before washing, gently shake, dust, or vacuum the curtains to remove loose dust.
Step 3: If there are any visible stains with a small amount of mild detergent. Do not scrub aggressively, as this may damage the fabric or coating.
Step 4: Place the curtains loosely in the washing machine, and use a gentle or delicate cycle. Please note that we recommend using cold water to avoid damaging the blackout layer
Step 5: Avoid strong bleach, excessive detergent, and harsh cleaning products.
Step 6: Hang curtains in a well-ventilated area and allow them to dry completely. It is particularly important to prevent musty and moldy in Singapore’s humid climate
Step 7: If the curtains are wrinkled, gently iron or steam the curtains.
Step 8: Once completely dry, reinstall the hooks and adjust them to the same position to ensure the curtains hang properly.
How to maintain curtains on a daily basis.
1. Gently shake or dust your curtains regularly to prevent dust from accumulating in the fabric. For further cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
2. Open windows when weather conditions allow and maintain good airflow around the curtains. Avoid keeping damp curtains closed for long periods in case of mould.
3. If something spills onto the curtain, gently blot it dry with a clean cloth as soon as possible.
4. If you have pets, regularly remove pet hair and dust using a lint roller or suitable vacuum attachment. Please prevent your pet’s claws from snagging the fabric.
5. Periodically inspect curtains for mould and mildew, especially those near windows, bathrooms or other humid areas.
